There are many ways to finance studies abroad. Please see here for an overview.
If you have decided to spend time abroad within Europe, the chances are high that you will be able to receive funding via the Erasmus+ funding programme. For more information on the participating countries and Erasmus+ funding available, please see the overview on the Erasmus+ programme. More information is available in the sections on studying and completing internships abroad.
In principle, we always recommend students submit an application for international BAföG (federal student loan). Many students receive this funding despite the fact that their parents’ income means they are not eligible for BAföG within Germany. However, please be aware that you will need to submit your application to the responsible BAföG office (only available in German) at least six months before you go abroad. Funding conditions include sufficient language proficiency and a stay of at least one semester (even if you are completing an internship).
An Education Loan (Bildungskredit) is another option to finance your time abroad. It consists of a low-interest loan with monthly payments of around € 300 for a maximum of 24 months. Education Loans are not means-tested, i.e. your parents’ income and personal assets are irrelevant. For more information, please ask at the BAföG office, your Studentenwerk, or a bank.
A whole host of different scholarships are available in Germany, which may make it difficult to identify the best option for you. The German Academic Exchange Service (Deutscher Akademischer Austauschdienst, DAAD) provides sound information on this subject in its scholarship database, which is a good starting point. If you take the time to search for a scholarship, you will undoubtedly find a funding source to suit your needs. You can then able to apply for funding directly. We have also compiled a list of local and regional funding sources for you: BayInd, BayLat, BayHost, BayChina, BaCaTeC, BFHZ, Walter Ell Foundation, Dr. Georg Schaefer Youth Foundation (only available in German), Ranke-Heinemann Institute.
