Insurance

As a rule of thumb when planning a stay abroad: please ensure that you check in good time whether your health, accident, and liability insurance will provide sufficient cover when you are abroad. Please provide accurate information – different conditions apply when you study or complete an internship abroad.

The International Office recommends all students take out private health, accident, and liability insurance for their time abroad. The European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) or private health insurance does not always provide sufficient cover, especially with regard to return transport or specific medical treatment. You are instead able to take advantage of the DAAD insurance offers, for example.

Important information for students completing an internship

Please note that special regulations apply if you wish to complete an internship abroad rather than study.

Liability insurance

(e.g. for damage caused by students in the workplace): Liability insurance covers damage caused by students during their time abroad. Different liability insurance models exist in some countries. In certain circumstances, you risk not having sufficient liability insurance cover. Your internship company must indicate in the Learning Agreement whether they provide any insurance cover (only for Erasmus+ SMP).
In countries where this is not a mandatory stipulation in the national regulations, your internship company is not compelled to take out such insurance. In this case, you must ensure that you have sufficient insurance cover for yourself. Please submit the according proof during the application process in the MoveOn-Portal.

Accident insurance

(e.g. for accidents in the workplace): Accident insurance covers any damage you may suffer in the event of an accident in the workplace. In many countries, employees are insured against accidents in the workplace by their employer. Please note, however, that the amount of cover for interns varies from country to country. Your internship company must indicate in the Learning Agreement whether they provide any insurance cover (only for Erasmus+ SMP). Similar to liability insurance, in countries where this is not a mandatory stipulation in the national regulations, you must ensure that you have sufficient insurance cover for yourself. Please submit the according proof during the application process in the MoveOn-Portal.
